In mid-July a total of 1,620 WaterSafes were delivered to the drought-prone region of Jaipur Grameen, a semi-arid area on the edge of the Thar Desert. This initiative has already made a meaningful impact on the lives of local residents, improving public health and significantly reducing the dangers posed by unsafe drinking water.
Jaipur Grameen, a rural district surrounding Jaipur city, faces severe water scarcity due to its dry climate and overreliance on diminishing groundwater supplies. The region’s limited access to clean water is further complicated by groundwater contamination, which poses serious health risks. The lack of surface water sources worsens these challenges, leaving residents to grapple with unreliable and unsafe water for daily use.
Water access in the region remains a daily struggle, particularly for women and children, who often have to undertake long, physically demanding journeys to collect water. To ease this burden, the WaterSafe project introduced specially designed backpacks that provide a practical and efficient solution for water transport. Made from durable, puncture-resistant polyethylene, WaterSafe is lightweight yet sturdy, ensuring both ease of use and hygiene. With this innovative tool, communities can now transport water more safely and with less strain, helping to improve quality of life in this drought-affected region.
The Project Objectives
Alleviate Physical Burden: Reduce the physical strain of water transportation, particularly for women and children, by redistributing the weight from the head and spine to the shoulders.
Improve Accessibility: Provide a practical means of carrying water over long distances, making water transport easier and more accessible for villagers.
Ensure Durability and Hygiene: Constructed from durable materials, WaterSafe maintain hygiene standards crucial for safe water storage and transportation.
Empower Rural Communities: Offer a practical tool to help villagers manage their water needs more effectively, improving their resilience to water scarcity.
Foster Sustainable Solutions: Promote the use of innovative technologies and materials to address water-related challenges in arid regions.
By distributing 1,620 WaterSafes in Jaipur, the WaterSafe initiative has significantly enhanced the daily lives of villagers by providing a sustainable and reliable solution for water transport and storage. This effort has not only eased the physical strain on women and children, who often bear the responsibility of collecting water, but has also played a vital role in saving lives in one of the most challenging environments on Earth.
In the next 30 to 45 days, Dhara Sansthan NGO will distribute 6,000 more WaterSafe in the Barmer and Jaipur regions, further expanding the project’s positive impact.
